12th & Park

For Harold “Champ” Petty, running 12th & Park Recreational Center is about more than sport; it’s about making a difference in the everyday lives of the kids in his neighborhood. A former St. Louis Golden Gloves champion, Harold trained under the legendary Kenny Loehr, fighting professionally for nearly 10 years and beating 5 eventual world champions along the way. Now in charge at 12th & Park, he’s seen his talent for boxing evolve into a talent for building community: kids train, and then stay by choice, helping with chores around the gym rather than hitting the streets. Voted Best Boxing gym in 2008 by the Riverfront Times, and one of the RFT’s Best of St. Louis in 2009, 12th & Park continues to encourage and inspire people in and around the neighborhood is serves.
