The Sugar Witch
Since landing in St. Louis in 2021, Sophie Mendelson and Martha Bass have been building community one ice cream sandwich at a time, spinning nostalgia, individuality and queerness into the details. Ice cream is a conduit for connection at Sugarwitch, where a staff comprised of all genders works inside the bones of Carondelet Bakery, which was once dominated by men. After years of sitting empty, the building is once again filled with life, in colors never before seen within its walls, its vibrance radiating far beyond the street on which it sits.
It is at once old and new, a familiar landmark that’s become a place where people feel seen and safe, thanks to the duo’s adamant protection of and commitment to a community that continues to fight tirelessly for both. This is love conveyed through the simplest of means, a small business with big heart, determined to create a space where all are welcome. At its heart are Sophie and Martha, whose passion for people is infectious, genuine and far more addictive than the frozen treats that have brought them to this moment.
Director’s note: this film was produced alongside our milestone tenth anniversary of The Spotlight Series®, bringing us back to the site of our first episode, Bob the Baker. Sadly, Bob passed away a couple of years after filming, and we’re grateful to Sophie for allowing us back to visit. Not only did she tell a remarkable story, but we were captivated by our personal sense of nostalgia, returning to this extraordinary building.
